Illuminated Europe

They say a picture paints a thousand words, so we've set out to discover what photography might be able to tell us about today's Europe and are pleased to announce the winners of our December competition.

Following on from the success of last month's Europe Through a Lens, we decided to go with another light-based theme for December and put out a call for images of "Illuminated Europe". Our readers were more than up to the task, leaving the judges spoilt for choice.

In the midst of a strong field, it was Tobias Melzer who ultimately claimed top honours with Night rider, a vivid moonlit image taken from a roadside in Upper Bavaria. The photo was praised for its depth and geometry, with one judge admitting that he would have probably come up with a similar image, if faced with the same topic. It is not the first time that the Munich-based photographer has impressed our judges: back in August, Tobias won the very first edition of Europe Through a Lens with an incongruous scene from the British summer. This time around, however, his photo was no lucky snapshot, but the result of a long time waiting around in the freezing cold for a car to go past and light up the road.

19-year-old Andrew Ho was awarded second place for Illuminated by nature, a starry night sky worthy of Vincent van Gogh. Describing his picture, Andrew, who is originally from Hong Kong but now lives in the UK, said "No matter how gorgeous artificial lights are, nothing can compare with the gift from Mother Nature." If you want to see more of Andrew's photos, feel free to visit his Flickr account.

Third place went to Kunal Chopra, a PhD candidate in Developmental Biology at the University of Sheffield, for Divine lamp, which particularly struck the judges because of its symmetry and colour balance. Kunal began taking photos in 2011 and has recently branched out into shooting in RAW. His current speciality is travel, nature and portrait photography, and you can find other examples of his work here.

Many congratulations to the three winners and a big thank you everyone who took part. If you missed the competition deadline, though, never fear; Europe Through a Lens will be back with a new theme very soon!

If the Editorial team had an actual office it would have to stretch from the corner of Britain to the edges of Spain, Sweden, Germany and beyond. (With frequent trips to America too) .  The term 'from the editorial office' then, is very much a figure of speech.
