Call for Editors and Managing Editor

Written by Editorial Team

Are you interested in journalism, curious to find out what it feels like to work for a truly international, young and motivated team? Then you should apply! E&M magazine is looking for two editors and a managing editor to join our exciting and innovative online magazine and to help us redefine young European journalism.

E&M is Europe's first online lifestyle magazine created by young Europeans for young Europeans. Over 24 issues, 4,000 facebook friends, 100 writers and a Charlemagne youth prize to our name, we're looking for some new editors to help us grow the project! E&M is special in that it writes about Europe as both a transnational and personal experience across a whole range of topics including politics, culture, sex and travel. This makes it fun, engaging and intellectually challenging. Our editors all have jobs / studying so be prepared for a busy and ambitious team!

The project is fully voluntary and not for profit so all of our positions are unpaid. What we do offer is a passionate team keen to gain experience running an international magazine and lots of opportunities to develop your own journalistic ideas and skills. Working on our projects, previous editors have debated foreign ministers, ran journalism workshops, debates, and written for international newspapers.

E&M editors manage one of the six sections of the magazine, deciding which stories we run and how we present them. More importantly, they have freedom to conceptualise and run projects with lots of independence. Editors come from a variety of backgrounds but what brings us together is the passion to write about Europe intelligently and transnationally.

● BABY is our section for sex, gender, dating and everything that turns Europe on.
● SIXTH SENSE is our blog section covering current events ranging from real-time political analysis to coverage of cultural events.

You will....
● Pitch, commission and edit work by authors from our international network
● Produce five articles per issue (Baby) or one article a week (Sixth Sense)
● Contribute to decision-making in the running of the magazine and projects through editorial skype conferences
● Conceptualise and lead projects beyond the magazine such as workshops, debating events and journalism prizes

You'd be good if you have....
● Strong English skills and an ability to work with authors who have english as a second language
● Demonstrated interest in journalism and writing about the section theme
● A passionate Interest in Europe and supporting a transnational debate about Europe
● Highly motivated, able to work independently and willing to take on responsibility

The Managing Editor role is a new role we're creating to help coordinate the editorial board and ensure that the magazine is getting better every issue. We all have jobs / studying and need someone to help us have a vision on what E&M could be doing better. This doesn't mean you have to boss us around (we don't do hierarchies) but if you like the idea of running a complex and dynamic small enterprise, E&M is the ideal place to test out your skills.

You will.....
● Manage workflow, production cycles, and quality control for the magazine
● Manage our author database and help to recruit new writers
● Support project managers to write funding applications for major grants and deliver exciting projects
● Contribute to decision-making in the running of the magazine and projects through editorial skype conferences
● Come up with new ways to strategically position and develop useful partnerships

You'd be good if you have....
● Good people skills and ability to manage a diverse team with lots going on outside of the project
● The ability to stay highly motivated and motivate others, as well as willing to take on responsibility for individual projects
● Some experience leading projects and/or working in small teams
● An interest in Europe and supporting a transnational debate about Europe (journalism would be a plus)

With a small dynamic team, these roles will place you at the core of an expanding project with plenty of opportunity to use your own creativity. We aim to help create a European public sphere, with debates that go beyond national boundaries and for that we need exciting new people to help us!
